January 2004

6 Jan: Been lazy. Been resting. So not much to report. Time spent surfing during the break brought me to World Idol finale. Check out www.worldidol.tv. Remember Kelly Clarkson? Well, sometime in Dec, I wrote a letter to KLUE telling their readers about Australian Idol winner, Guy Sebastian - eh, he Malaysian lah! Cool! Also checked out his site, www.guysebastian.com.au. Imagine the speed of how things work: within six days of winning Aussie Idol, he had already completed recording his album, 'Angels Brought Me Here'. And, the song (of the same name as album) has already been getting lots of airplay. Oh yeah. One more thing to add. Ariff Akhir will be giggin once a month at Valhalla Liquid Bar. See ya and Happy New Year!

November 2003

27 Nov: I hear EMINEM might be heading to KL. Is it just a stupid rumour or is it true? Pray tell though I'm really starting to doubt it. I would prefer to see No Doubt play anytime!!! On another note, I'm real happy coz my band, ISHee has gotten back together and we'll be playing just one gig on 15 Dec at No Black Tie together with a list of 7 other indie bands. Please come support all our bangs. Only RM8.

20 Nov: Thanks, Peter Brown for heading down to Liquid Bar to check us out. Soft Touch is his band but tonight, Peter turned up to share his songs from album Warm. I love "The Secret". Peter will be playing at Paul's Place on 16 Dec. More on the organiser of Acoustic Jam Sessions at www.lemang.com

17 Nov: Our first night at No Black Tie. Despite the disappointing turn-out, Saiful (vocals) belted a couple of Japanese Ariff (vocals, guitar www.liquidjoget.tripod.com) accompanied by Nan (slide guitar) and Amit (percussions) entertained close friends and a very! supportive audience which included Pete Teo (www.peteteo.com) and Paul Lau (Tugu Drum Circle). Thanks for making it a special night!! It was also my first time meeting Pete. The man was jammin' away with Paul and little did I realise he was kinda practising for his big gig at Actor's Studio. I like the man, I've decided. Love his lyrics. Absolutely. Pete, if you ever get to read this, you're really a great story-teller. Your lyrics are simply fab! Especially Marianne. The first one. OK. A bit about Paul. He's the organiser of the Tugu Drum Circle which gets together every Sunday, at 6pm, Tugu Negara carpark. Go check them out!

13 Nov: Seems like the complimentary happy hour nasi lemak is working!! So the crowd gets here early now. Plus the first 50 free cocktails for ladies! MOJO Pin rocks up at around 10.15pm. Vocals fronted by Daphne Lee. Martin's on the bass, Edward on rhythm guitar, Eddy on backup vocals and Henry on lead guitar. MOJO Pin writes their own stuff and has been performing for two years as a band. After a repertoire of five of their own songs, they cleverly ignored pleas from guests to play Unchained Melody!! Clever. Nice one, guys. Hope to hear more of your stuff at the next gig. Tony, another newbie takes centre stage for the next half an hour with his guitar and sings away to tunes written by himself, also a Bruce Springsteen number. That where you got your influence, Ton? Cool, dude! Then. Then. There's Mark. Canadian. Lived in Taiwan. Lecturer. Mark reads us pieces about his father, an ex-lover themed 'Cockroach', and segments from some of his favourite books including one on the DEVIL. So Valhalla ended with a different mellow twist this time.  top

8 Nov: After much heard around the grapevine, we went to check out the Kit Kat Lounge & Supper Club next to the Sheraton Imperial Hotel, Jalan Sultan Ismail. Noticed that lately there are more and more bands taking up stage at clubs around town? Well, at the JAZZ BAR, we were impressed with the line-up! Led by Jasmine, a Filipina Jazz songstress (who is also into the performing arts) and accompanied by Pak Yah on the drums (he rocks!!! and he's only 70+), Piano Man Ahmad Sharif, Eddy on the saxophone and Albert on the 5-string bass guitar, this band takes it away! WOW! If you have a chance, if you like jazz and lurve slurpin' Kit Katty martinis, check them out. Band starts from 11pm onwards every night except Sundays. top

6 Nov: Alex & Dilly performed for our listening pleasure once again. Thks, gals! Your harmony is absolutely fab considering you hardly practiced at all!! Today was also the launch of LIQit, a once-a-month all-woman gig. OK, enough of gal power. Next week, we've got MOJO PIN. Can't wait to hear you guys strut! OH! A very very important note: VALHALLA 2 MONDAYS A MONTH @ NO BLACK TIE [behind Istana Hotel] kicks off with G-MAN performing on Nov 17 [this gig is cancelled and replaced by Ariff and Friends]. Thanks to NBT proprietor, Evelyn Ho for giving us a shot. The NBT gigs will feature singer-songwriters. Know anyone? Email us valhallakl@hotmail.com and book your slot soon. We're booked out for the rest of the year so far and DJ Beryl and I (Jazz) are warming up to the fact that we might, might, finally break some ground. Thanks for your support, people!! top

4 Nov: G'day! It's Tuesday 6.34am. No, I'm not an early riser. Met earlier for our weekly Valhalla meeting. Worked all nite on this site. Hope y'all like it better. Surfed on to Saerze's site: "You go, girlfriend. We know it ain't easy. Keep that fire burnin". I'm still all fired up for the next gig esp. after checking out Ground Xero at No Black Tie. Good stuff, Izwin & company! Hope to see u at Valhalla someday. Before u get famous. After's good too. Oh! Just added a new link to the GiG Guide in NSW, OZ for anyone headin that way. top

1 Nov: Saturday 10pm-12am at The Disco. Invited by SONY MUSIC, Team Valhalla helped put together the 80s REPLAY RETRO party to launch the latest 80s compilations - 80s REPLAY. CDs retail at RM42.90. Acoustic duo, Ariff and Saiful sang to Nena's 99 Luft Balloons and Karma Kameleon while A.D. practised his samba moves again with Turn the Beat Around and Conga! Rubik cube contestant, Jason walked away with RM500 worth of CDs while Amy a.k.a. like-a-virgin-MADONNA, in torn leggins, leather hat, denim shorts et all walked away with RM250 worth of CDs!! top

October 2003

30 Oct: The eve of Halloween. Early birds were entertained with a knife and a pumpkin. Valhalloween welcomed A.D. with two Gloria Estefan numbers. Jazz managed to get five wailers and screamers to yell at the top of their voices. The winning screamer was, of course, a boy!!! Ahmad walked away with two tickets to the Sony 80s Retro party. Best pumpkin carvings went to two teams. A tie, can u believe it? The honorable judges, Su-Ann & Karen made it all the way from Connecticut were fab & sponsored an additional jug of liquid to appease the winners. Ahh...that's the 'spirit'...top

16 Oct: Lost in Transit a-cappella - strictly LIT. Gal-power unite for a promo show before their main gig at Actors' Studio.

Thanks to those who made it super with the impromptu gigs early on in Oct. Our All Gal Gig kinda fizzled with three acts cancelled at the last min. But n'mind coz Saerze (thks galfren!) led beautifully followed by Logan in a lip-sync and then Jazz with her bass guitar. Then all wanted to sing. Jerome was coaxed up on stage, and later Aussie, Matthew got up and did a number and two other guys whom I shall refer to as THE SUITS performed Elvis. Ah...that's Valhalla for you. Impromptu. top

Help make Valhalla OUR Performing space.
Tell your friends about the Open Mic sessions or just turn up!

BLAH BLAH

We're on the lookout for stars to star in VALHALLA'S UNPLUGGED gigs. Looking for bands....solo singers....register with us now! Oh! Btw, we've been contacted by private organisations to feature Valhalla artistes for paid events. So it looks like Valhalla is moving from an Open Mic event to becoming "agents". We negotiate rates for our artistes who've performed at Valhalla and are trying to set an industry standard. So guess we're achieving our vision...that artistes who start out at Valhalla with only passion for music in their pockets will eventually walk away with paid sessions! top

August 2003

Valhalla Markets featured Caroline with some new people with jewelry and beads (I bought some!!), then there was Leonard and Muna with their super cool second-hand goodies - baju, original CDs etc. Why not make some money and bring some of your old gear? Now we've got the car sticker guys, Hseoun & Noel in tow. Just turn up. We'll help display your stuff for ya.
